Modeling Forms of Surprise in Artificial Agents: Empirical and Theoretical Study of Surprise Functions

چکیده
This paper addresses the issue of how to compute the intensity of surprise in an artificial agent. Resolution of this issue is important for the further specification of the computational model of surprise proposed by Macedo and Cardoso (2001) that was implemented in artificial agents “living” in a multiagent environment. This model of surprise is mainly rooted in the cognitive-psychoevolutionary model of surprise proposed by the research group of the University of Bielefeld (Meyer, Reisenzein, & Schützwohl, 1997) and in proposals by Ortony and Partridge. We propose several possible functions to compute the intensity of surprise. To assess their accuracy, they were evaluated in an experimental test that focused on the comparison of surprise intensity values generated by artificial agents with ratings by humans under similar

The practical advantage of surprise-based agents
We argue that taking surprise into account in the artificial agents’s reasoning may have advantageous implications in various situations. Relying on theoretical and empirical evidence, our arguments are supported by the application of surprise-based agents to three different domains, namely exploration of unknown environments, divergent production and evaluation of creative products, and select...
متن کاملModeling Forms of Surprise in an Artificial Agent
Mainly rooted in the cognitive-psychoevolutionary model of surprise proposed by the research group of the University of Bielefeld (Meyer, Reisenzein, Schützwohl, etc.), the computational model of surprise described in this paper relies on the assumption that surprise-eliciting events initiate a series of mental processes that begin with the appraisal of unexpectedness, continue with the interru...
متن کاملTowards Artificial Forms of Surprise and Curiosity
This paper addresses the issue of modelling human forms of surprise and curiosity in an artificial perceptual agent. The following statements support our approach: humans are surprised when they perceive something that they did not expect; humans feel desire to learn more (i.e., feel curiosity) about novel (possibly unexpected) objects, usually manifested by focusing the senses on those objects...
متن کاملLearning Models of Unknown Events
Agents with incomplete models of their environment are likely to be surprised by it. For agents in immense environments that defy complete modeling, this represents an opportunity to learn. We investigate approaches for situated agents to detect surprise, discriminate among different forms of surprise, and ultimately hypothesize new models for the unknown events that surprised them. We instanti...
متن کاملSplenogonadal Fusion Associated with Bilateral Cryptorchidism, Presenting as an Operative Surprise - Report of a Case
Splenogonadal fusion is a rare entity with approximately 150 reported cases until the year 2005. The entity is a rare congenital anomaly in which there is fusion of splenic and gonadal anlagen or mesonephric derivatives. Splenogonadal fusion has two continuous and discontinuous types. About ten cases have been reported to be associated with bilateral cryptorchidism in literature. Very few cases...
